When I was younger and of a mischievous nature my Rabbi would tell me to be a ‘mench’. The word originates from the use of German and Yiddish and is meant to mean (in this text) a good boy. Mench means ‘human’ as in not to be an animal.

So where am I going with this?

We all judge, it’s in our nature to do so. It’s what sets us aside from the animal world along with other traits. We are taught it from a young age and shown how to make the right choices ‘by judging’. I do it all the time at work as it’s my job to assess or rate others. We do it all the time on VR when we rate profiles etc.

What does amaze me is the blatant misuse of its meaning. I read it a lot on people’s profiles that they don’t judge others. There is nothing wrong with judging others as long as the criteria that you base it on works. Be a mench and judge nicely.

Although I’m proud to call myself British it tickles me that the rest of the world generally sees us as European. We rarely call this island The British Isles except in a geographical sense. We like our isolation, it’s what sets us apart, maybe that’s why it’s hard to come to terms with the fact that one day we will be ‘a part’ of Europe as opposed to being ‘apart’.

To think that a thin stretch of water has saved us from invasion, plague and the metric system. That said, the metric system is here, well sort of, it’s been trying to establish its ugly head since the medieval age.

I still have a hard time with metrics and often have to use a conversion table to get by. I still shop for ‘a pint’ of milk and when I speak in terms of ‘bobs’ and ‘shillings’ … in fact let’s not go there.

I understand that progress is good, it’s just not good for me!
